Collectable Fine Art Prints
What is a Silver Gelatin Fiber Print?
The silver gelatin print has been the most common method used to produce B>W photographs since the late 1890’s. The baryta paper used is processed in traditional B>W chemicals to produce the only truly neutral toned black and white print, which is a stable silver gelatin print.
Today the silver gelatin print is considered the gold standard when it comes to Black and White prints as this process is becoming a rarity in our day and age. Majority of the current labs are fully digital and are no longer equipped for wet process printing.
Silver Gelatin prints are one of the few artisanal print processes that requires expertise, patience and quality time to produce. Once the image is projected onto the paper, the prints come out of the chemistry wet and require air drying on large screens. As the drying process is complete the prints return to the wet processing room for selenium toning to provide true optimal archival permanence.
The fiber paper tends to curl as it dries, and needs to be flattened in a large press by hand. Each print is carefully examined to make sure it is perfect, and if it is, then it is trimmed by hand then dry mounted for final presentation.
The rarity, beauty, quality, and longevity makes these fine art prints worth the investment.
Limited Edition prints are traditionally made by hand in in my own custom made wet darkroom. Each print can take several days to make when fine tuning the tonal range. The photographs are selenium toned and washed for optimal archival permanence.

Presentation > Quality
The silver gelatin fibre base paper curls when drying. It also expands and contracts extensively through its’ lifespan. For this reason, over half a century the dry mounting process with a 100% acid free cotton rag tissue onto museum grade matboards has been the preferred choice for the final representation. These high quality matboards are made of cotton and still to this day remain the preferred choice for many museums and fine art photographers. This method is not only a time-honoured tradition, but also provides the comfort and assurance that the matted artwork will be preserved for future generations. It is highly recommended to protect the silver gelatin print with a UV conservational glazing.
